World Keratoconus Day #WorldKCDay

World Keratoconus Day, on November 10, raises global awareness about keratoconus and ectatic corneal disorders. #WorldKCDay

Imagine seeing the world through a distorted lens that makes everything blurry, hazy, and distorted. This is the daily reality for many people with keratoconus. Keratoconus is an uncommon eye disease that alters the shape of the cornea, the clear window of the eye. It causes the cornea to thin and bulge into a cone-like shape, bending light rays and affecting vision. This condition can significantly impact daily activities, emotional well-being, and social interactions. But there is hope and help for those living with keratoconus.

Dealing with keratoconus is challenging. While common diseases often have extensive research and treatment options, rare or uncommon conditions like keratoconus typically have less research and fewer treatment options. In some countries, even getting an accurate diagnosis can be difficult.

Living with keratoconus often means adapting to a new way of seeing the world. Many people rely on specialized contact lenses or glasses to improve their vision, while others may need surgical interventions. Despite these challenges, the keratoconus community is resilient and supportive, sharing tips, resources, and encouragement to help each other navigate daily life.

On November 10, we celebrate World Keratoconus Day, a global campaign to raise awareness and educate people about this condition. Every year on this day, we come together to inform the public, researchers, health professionals, and policymakers about the impact of keratoconus on those affected and their loved ones.

By participating in World KC Day, you can join a community of people who understand and support each other in their journey with keratoconus. You can also learn more about this condition and how to cope with its challenges. World KC Day is an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of millions of people living with keratoconus.

What is World Keratoconus Day?

World Keratoconus Day, observed annually on November 10, is dedicated to raising global awareness about keratoconus and other ectatic corneal disorders.

This day is marked by various organizations, companies, healthcare professionals, celebrities, and individuals living with keratoconus, along with their families. Activities on World Keratoconus Day include keratoconus screening programs, educational seminars, sports events, and more.

What is Keratoconus?

Keratoconus (KC) is a degenerative eye condition where the normally round, dome-shaped cornea becomes progressively thinner. This thinning causes a cone-like bulge to develop in the area where the cornea is thinnest, usually in the center. If left untreated, keratoconus can lead to significant visual impairment and even legal blindness.

How Many People Have Keratoconus?

Keratoconus affects approximately 50 to 200 people per 100,000 in the general population. It is found worldwide and across all ethnic groups.

When Was World Keratoconus Day Started?

World Keratoconus Day, also known as National Keratoconus Day, was established in 2016 by the National Keratoconus Foundation (NKCF), an educational program of the Gavin Herbert Eye Institute at UC Irvine.
